Prep School Preview (Part 1 6A/5A/4A/3A)

With the multiple amount of schools in the area, it would be impossible to do a thorough preview.  What I will do is list the top runners in each classification based on their times from last season.  I would like to give a big thank you to Bruce Taylor and all of the great work that he does at Georgia Milesplit  If you are not familiar with this website, it is the place for running information for High School in Georgia.

I am going to cull from his work to identify the runners from each classification who  made the top 100 returning runners from each class.  This will take a few days, so be patient.  Also understand that this does not correctly relate to transfers and incoming freshmen.  Those were unknown when he put these lists together.  Also, it is strictly on low times, now attempt to handicap the times and the courses.  So after all of that here are the runners who made the list for the three largest classifications:

Place  Name            High School       Time        Race       Graduation Year

6A – Girls/Boys

There are no 6A schools in the area that this blog covers so this one will not have any runners

Schedules

We are now less than a month from the beginning of the college cross country season and Fort Valley State University, Brewton Parker College, Mercer University and Central Georgia Technical College do not have their schedules published on their websites.  I will post them as soon as they become available.

Today is the 1st day that GHSA schools could run a cross country race.  As already mentioned, the 1st big race of the area is the Mid State Cross Country Classic co-hosted by Warner Robins and Perry HS’ on 22 August.

A few Mid Georgia schools will also be participating in the Twilight in the Grove race on the same day hosted by Locust Grove HS.

Lets get out there and cheer on the local runners.

McFarland, USA

For those who have not yet seen it, McFarland, USA is a great movie about Cross Country.  It details that creation of one of the best high school programs in the nation at McFarland High School in California.  As it is a Disney movie, the theme is pretty standard.  Introduction, creation of the team, team building, overcoming differences, unexpected conflict, resolution (usually the good guys winning).

The movie also makes me glad that I live and run in Middle Georgia, instead of mountain covered California.

One thing that I really appreciate about this movie is the emphasis on the team aspect of the sport.  One of the main characters wins a race, but is immediately concerned how his team is doing.  What a great lesson that I wish all of the runners in the area, either college or high school would learn.

If you have seen the movie, write a few comments about what you thought.

Mid State Cross Country Classic 22 August 2015
