OXFORD, Ala. – Seven Mercer men competed in the Strut’s Season Opener invitational meet Friday evening, resulting in a fifth place team finish among six total cross country programs.
The Bears, who ran in the red division of the 5k run, finished with a total time of one hour and 24.35 seconds and an average time of 16:55 individually. FreshmenJohn Fravel and Marc Reiser were Mercer’s top-two finishers with times of 16:35.1 and 16:44.4, good for 48th and 60th place, respectively.
Auburn placed at the top of the team rankings, followed by Troy, Samford and Jacksonville State. The Bears finished ahead of Florida A&M, which took sixth place in the red division.
Behind a 15-minute and 6.9 second individual performance by senior Victoria Rogers, the Mercer women placed sixth overall at the Strut’s Season Opener on Friday.
Mercer’s overall time of 1:18.02 in the 4k cross country run placed the Bears behind team leader Auburn (1:12.44), Georgia State (1:15.18), Chattanooga (1:15.42), Florida A&M (1:16.28) and Samford (1:17.40). The Bears finished ahead of Troy and host Jacksonville State.
Rogers’ 15:06.9 mark was good for 17th place overall. Twelve other Mercer women competed in the event: Courtney Czerniak (15:35.0), Kimberly Whiting (15:36.2), Shannon Millikin (15:48.2), Anna Grzeszczak (15:56.6), McKaylin Darsey(16:03.2), Katie-Rose Alligood (16:17.5), Brianna Wahy (16:37.9), Bethanie Bailey(16:40.9), Ellen Powell (16:50.3), Julia Turbyfield (16:56.9), Katie Whitworth(17:23.2) and Nidhi Shashidara (17.29.4).
Mercer hits the road again next weekend for the Powerade Invitational in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10.
