The Georgia Military College Prep School Cross Country teams are gearing up for the start of their 2016 season with high hopes. Lots of miles in the heat and humidity have laid the groundwork for what should be a successful season.
The boys team, who placed 2nd at the 2015 GHSA Class Single-A (Public) State Championships are gearing up for a great season. The team will be led by Senior Hunter Kimball, who is among the favorites to win the individual state title. The boys’ team has a wealth of talent this year to make a strong run at the team title. Kimball will be joined by juniors Aaron Kirkland, TJ Johnson, and Kaylon Farley. Sophomores Taylor Sherwood, Dylan Smith and Ethan Yopp also make strong contributions. These seven runners will be pushed by sophomore Logan Steinmeyer, freshman Jacob Kauzlarich and Ryan Barsby. Sophomore Dylan Smith, speaking on the upcoming season said “We are really focused on the State Championships. Drew Charter, who defeated us last year had better be working hard. That is our main focus of the season.”
The girl’s team has also worked hard over the summer and will be led by Senior Annie Benson. Along with Benson, Junior Mary Elizabeth Jones, Sophomores Lyssa Blair and Melida Steele will be joined by freshmen Emma Nelson and Mattison Strom. Nelson and Strom were very strong Middle School runners and look to contribute from the beginning of the season.
Coach Debbie Barsby is optimistic for the season. “Summer running was good. We had lots of participation and are really excited for the season. I see constant improvement every day in the teams and a desire to work and get faster.”
The Bulldogs will start their season out with the Mid State Classic on 20 Aug in Perry, GA. They return home to host he GMC Small Schools Showcase on 25 Aug. They follow that up with races at North Oconee High School, Morgan County High School, Brentwood, First Presbyterian Day, John Milledge Academy, a 2nd home meet and Mount de Sales. The season will finish with three very important meets. On 18 October, GMC, Baldwin High School and JMA will all meet at the Walter B Williams park for the 2nd Annual Baldwin County Cross County Run. Last year JMA won the girl’s race, Baldwin won the boy’s race and GMC swept the two Middle School races. The following week will be the Area race where GMC boys are the defending champion, the girls were 4th last season. The season will finish with the GHSA State Championships where both teams look to finish their season on a high note.
