Cross Country Only National Invitational Results

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – Mercer University freshman Ahmed Jama continued his strong freshman campaign, helping the Bears’ men’s cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Cross Country Only National Invitational.

Jama finished fourth overall with a personal-best time of 25:39.9, just shy of a minute faster than his previous mark. Cameron Gatt finished 15th overall with a time of 26:41.7, while Nicholas Ashmead (18th, 27:09.3) and Mark Brannen (19th, 27:18.9) also cracked the Top20.

Abraham Balawi closed out the Bears’ Top-5 in 26th place with a time of 27:58.1, while Ross Porter followed closely behind in 28:00.9.

Mercer recorded an average time of 26:57.58, while totaling 82 points in the meet. Richmond won the event, while Marshall and Austin Peay rounded out the top three.

The Bears return to action on October 31, when they compete in the Southern Conference Championships in Greenville, S.C.

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – For the second straight meet, the Mercer University women’s cross country team got top-five finishes from seniors Jenna Gipperich and Kami Orrender, as the team finished second at the Cross Country Only Invitational on Saturday.

Mercer finished with 48 total points after placing all five of its top runners in the Top-15. The Bears also placed six runners among the event’s Top-20 runners, while posting a season-best average time of 19:14.34.

Orrender had a season-best 5k time of 18:33.9 to finish fourth overall, while Gipperich followed close behind in fifth place with a time of 18:45.7 to eclipse her top time from 2014 by nearly 30 seconds.

The pack of Courtney Czerniak, Cheyenne Andrew and Bethanie Bailey rounded out the scoring for the Bears, who were coming off the Julius Johnson Inviational team title. Czerniak (19:36.1) edged Andrew (19:36.7) as the tandem placed 12th and 13th respectively, while Bailey finished 14th with a time of 19:39.3.

The Bears return to action on October 31, when they compete in the Southern Conference Championships in Greenville, S.C.
