GMC at University of West Georgia

On Friday 11 September, the GMC men’s and women’s Cross Country teams travelled to Carrollton, GA to participate in the University of West Georgia Wolves Cross Country Invitational.  The course was in the rolling hills and strands of hardwoods that surround the athletic complex just west of the university.

The Lady Bulldogs ran first looking to improve on last week’s race at the Georgia College Bulldog Invitational. With the addition of two more runners, the GMC women were able to score as a team.  The ladies endured high heat and humidity during their race.  Sophomore Nina Skinner led the team as the battled against 12 other squads, of which 10 were 4 year schools.

Skinner placed 38th with a time of 27:16 for the 5k course.   Freshman Jacqueline Jones was 40 seconds slower and ended up in 42nd place.  Other scoring runners for the team were Carrie Kirkwood, Ashleigh Floody, and Jassmine Stevens.  The Lady Bulldogs ended up in 7th place with a total of 201 points.

With the women completed, the men took to the rolling course for their 8k race.  Freshman twins John and Adam Dougherty joined the lead group of runners and ran great races.  John ended up in 7th place with a time of 29:43.  Adam was just a little behind with a time of 30:41 and 9th place.  This is a huge accomplishment for these young men.  The 2nd set of Freshmen twins, Evan and Jake Soggs placed 3rd and 4th for the team.  The final scoring runner for GMC was Dennis Koenig who placed 47th in the race.

The GMC Men’s team totaled 81 points, good enough for a 3rd place finish among the 13 teams that were in attendance.  Great job to both teams!

The next meet for both the men’s and women’s team will be 25 September at the Mercer Julius Johnson Invitational to the held at the Macon Children’s Industrial Home.
