GCSU Bobcat Invitational (GMC Perspective)
On Friday 4 September the Georgia Military College men’s and women’s Cross Country teams had their first meet. After months of training the Bulldogs met up with the Bobcats of Georgia College and State University, the Pacers of University of South Carolina – Aiken and the Pirates of Armstrong State University. Georgia College’s West Campus course, one of the hardest in the southeastern United States was the venue for the opening meet. The ladies ran first with Jacqueline Jones (Upper Marlboro, MD) with a time of 26:23 on the 5k course. She placed 8thoverall. Other runners for GMC were:
Carrie Kirkwood (Gray, GA) 32:04 (14th place)
Ashleigh Floody 33:50 (15th place)
Samantha McLeod 34:02 (16th place)
The lady Bulldogs were down 4 runners due to injuries, illness or absence, so they were not able to score as a team.
The second race of the day belonged to the men. Freshman John Dougherty (Gainesville, FL) took the lead in the 8k race from the beginning and ran a very strong race. With about 1.5 k to go, he was caught by 3 runners from Georgia College. He managed to hang on and ran a 30:52 and place 4th overall. He was followed up by his twin brother Adam Dougherty(Gainesville, FL) 35:17 13th place. Jake Soggs Atlanta, GA) ran a 35:19 for 14th place, followed by Dennis Koenig (Ulm, Germany) 36:47 in 15th place. Alex Garvin (Savannah, GA) was the 5th scoring runner for GMC. He ran a 37:07 and came in 16th place. The men’s team came in 3rd place with a total score of 62 points. They were only 12 points behind Armstrong State University.
